One of the things we love most about being Occupational Therapists is seeing how the right piece of equipment – no matter how big or small – can completely change someone’s life. Assistive Technology (AT) isn’t just about gadgets and devices. It’s about freedom, dignity and enabling someone to continue to do things that matter to them. It’s about giving people the chance to do more for themselves, or at the very least, stay connected to the activities and people that matter most.
At My Therapy Place, we see AT as more than “equipment” – we see it as possibility – and we’ll confess, we get a bit excited by that!
What Is Assistive Technology?
Assistive Technology includes any tool or system that helps someone do something they might otherwise find difficult. It can be as simple as a non-slip bath mat that makes the shower safer, or as complex as a customised electric wheelchair that allows someone to move through the world independently and rise up to eye level to speak with their loved ones.
- Low-cost and Simple AT might include shower chairs, dressing aids, or adaptive cutlery
- Complex AT could be wheelchairs, specialised communication devices, or environmental control units that open doors, switch on lights, or control appliances
But beyond the categories, AT is really about the opportunity it gives to someon, and that’s why we are so passionate at My Therapy Place about helping you find the best AT solution for you.
Why AT Matters So Much
The right piece of AT doesn’t just make a task easier. It:
- Restores a sense of independence – even in small ways, like being able to cook a favourite meal or dress without help
- Brings back safety and confidence – knowing you can move around your home without fear of falls
- Protects dignity and privacy – giving you more control over daily life
- Keeps people connected – enabling participation in community, hobbies, and relationships
It’s about the moments that matter most: joining a family dinner, making your own meal, texting a friend, or being able to choose when to step outside for fresh air.
Our Role in Matching People and Technology
For us, recommending AT is never about ticking a box or filling out paperwork. It’s about listening deeply to someone’s story – what they miss doing, what they dream of doing again, what they might like to do in the future and what would make daily life easier.
As OTs, we:
- Take the time to understand what’s meaningful to you
- Look closely at your environment and the challenges you face
- Trial equipment where possible, so you can see the difference it makes in real life
- Write detailed reports for NDIS, My Aged Care, DVA or other funding bodies, to make sure you get the support you need
- Provide training and ongoing support, so you feel confident using the equipment
At My Therapy Place, we know Assistive Technology isn’t just “stuff.” It’s hope, it’s connection, and it’s independence. Whether it’s a $20 aid or a complex electric wheelchair, the right tool can unlock opportunities and change lives – and we love what it can do!
If you or someone you love could benefit from Assistive Technology, reach out to My Therapy Place. Together, we’ll find the tools that don’t just make life easier, but also help make life better.
