Caring for a loved one is one of the most generous and loving roles anyone can take on – but it can also be one of the hardest. Carers often juggle work, family, and personal commitments on top of providing daily support. It’s no wonder that carer stress and burnout are so common.
At My Therapy Place, we see carers as partners in care. Supporting you is just as important as supporting the person you care for.
The Challenges Carers Often Face
Carers often tell us they feel:
Overwhelmed by competing demands
Physically tired or injured from heavy lifting and lots of manual handling
Emotionally drained, anxious, or isolated
Guilty about needing time for themselves
- Feeling overwhelmed
How OT Can Help Carers
Our role as OTs isn’t only about the person with disability – it’s also about making sure the caring role is sustainable. We can:
Recommend assistive technology to reduce physical strain
Simplify routines to save time and energy
Suggest home modifications to make caring tasks safer and easier
Link carers with respite services or community supports
Provide strategies for stress management and self-care
A Family Story
One parent we worked with was caring for her teenage son with disability while also supporting her husband with complex health needs – all while working full-time. She was exhausted. By introducing equipment to make transfers safer, reorganising her son’s routines, and linking her with respite services, her stress levels dropped, and she felt supported herslef and more equipped to keep fulfilling the carer role.
We know caregivers and carers are the backbone of support, but they need support too. A healthier, happier carer means better outcomes for everyone.
If you’re a carer feeling overwhelmed, reach out to My Therapy Place. We’ll work with you to find ways to make caring easier, safer, and more sustainable.
