Home Modifications: Creating a Safe, Accessible Space

Our homes should be places of comfort and independence. But for many people living with disability, injury, or age-related changes, everyday spaces can also become full of barriers. Bathrooms that feel unsafe, steps that stop you from entering your own home, or narrow doorways that limit mobility – all of these can make daily life harder than it needs to be.

At My Therapy Place, we believe everyone deserves a home that works for them. That’s where Occupational Therapy-led home modifications come in.

What Are Home Modifications?

Home modifications are changes made to your living space to improve safety, accessibility, and independence. They can be as simple as installing a grab rail in the bathroom, or as complex as redesigning an entire kitchen or bathroom.

Common Examples of Home Modifications

  • Minor modifications: grab rails, handheld showers, lever taps, non-slip flooring

  • Moderate modifications: ramps, widened doorways, stairlifts, bathroom adjustments

  • Major modifications: accessible bathrooms, reconfigured kitchens, or extensions for wheelchair use

Why Home Modifications Matter

The right modifications can:

  • Reduce the risk of falls or injuries

  • Enable someone to live as independently as possible in their home
  • Allow people to stay in their homes longer, rather than moving into care

  • Give back independence in personal care routines and access around your home

  • Reduce strain and manual handling on family members and carers

Our Role as OTs

Our team’s role is to ensure modifications are safe, effective, and tailored to each individual’s needs, while also giving your home modifications that are both functional and beautiful. We pride ourselves on working with you alongside experienced builders to achieve something that feels like it fits right in with the rest of your home. We:

  1. Assess how you currently move around your home

  2. Identify risks and barriers

  3. Work closely with you (and your family or carers) to understand what matters most

  4. Collaborate with builders, architects, and suppliers

  5. Support funding applications (including Privately funded, NDIS and Aged Care funded home modifications)
